ABSTRACT Classical Persian literature has consistently oscillated between two poles: the epic of reason and the impassioned ghazal. Within this context, Hafez’s Divan serves not merely as a meeting point for these two currents but as a site for the reinvention of ancient heritage through the concise form of the ghazal. Adopting an intertextual approach grounded in structural analysis, this study examines the function of Shahnameh references—the primary manifestation of epic heritage in Hafez’s work. The central question addressed here is the mechanism by which epic themes are adapted into the structure of the ghazal. The findings reveal that Hafez, employing the technique of brevity and conciseness, transforms the expansive narratives of the Shahnameh into multifaceted allusions; a single name or mythological figure thus simultaneously enriches the poem's ethical, political, and historical dimensions. The study demonstrates that, contrary to reductionist interpretations, Hafez does not draw an exclusionary line between Shahnameh-esque reason and mystical love; rather, by synthesizing the two, he attains a transcendent wisdom in which active reason serves self-sacrificing love. Furthermore, the research shows that the concept of a "good name" in Hafez’s ghazals represents a modern reinterpretation of the epic hero's ideal, shifting the immortality of the champion from the battlefield to the realms of aesthetic ethics and spiritual free-spiritedness.
