ABSTRACT The encounter with modernity—marking the most significant historical rupture in the intellectual life of contemporary Iran—precipitated fundamental transformations in the realm of literature, particularly poetry. Adopting an analytical-critical approach, this study examines the interaction between modernity and the enduring traditions of Persian poetry, as well as the consequences of this convergence. The central focus of the research is to elucidate how modernity has fostered a re-evaluation of traditional concepts—not only regarding form and structure (through the transition from classical prosody to free verse and Nimaic forms) but also concerning worldview and content. The findings indicate that the modernization process in Persian poetry has driven a shift from static verse—reliant on clichéd mystical and courtly themes—toward a dynamic, socially engaged poetry; a form in which the modern individual subject replaces the abstract beloved or the historical figure of praise. The study demonstrates that the contemporary poetic movement—exemplified by the works of Nima Yooshij, a pivotal figure in this encounter—did not entail a wholesale rejection of tradition, but rather a critical and aesthetic re-reading of it within the horizon of modernity. Ultimately, the article shows that by navigating this challenge, Persian poetry has forged a new identity; one that, while preserving ontological ties to its heritage, possesses the capacity to articulate the crises and inquiries of contemporary humanity.
