All contributing authors must meet the criteria for authorship, and international diversity is recognized. The order of author names should result from the joint decision of all co-authors. Substantial contribution is of paramount importance.
- Authorship creditshould be based on substantial contributions to:
- Conception and design of the study, OR
- Acquisition of data, OR
- Analysis and interpretation of data.
- All authors must have participated in:
- Drafting the article or critically revising it for important intellectual content.
- Final approval of the version to be published.
- Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
Authorship Criteria
Any individual who has made a substantial intellectual contribution to the underlying study (e.g., to the research question, design, analysis, interpretation, and written description) should be listed as an author. An individual who has not made a substantial intellectual contribution should not be an author. Providing technical services, text translation, supplying materials, or securing funding alone is not sufficient for authorship credit, though such contributions may be acknowledged in the article.
One author (the "guarantor") must take responsibility for the integrity of the work as a whole. This is typically the Corresponding Author (the person who submits the manuscript and receives reviewer comments), but other authors can also share this role. All authors must approve the final version of the manuscript. Preferably, all authors should be familiar with all aspects of the work.
Number of Authors
Editors should not arbitrarily limit the number of authors. If the editors believe the number of authors is unusually high relative to the scope and complexity of the work, they may request a detailed explanation of each author's contribution. If some individuals do not meet the authorship criteria, the editors may require their removal as a mandatory condition for publication.
Order of Authors
The order of authors on the article should be determined by the authors themselves. No one is more aware of individual contributions and mutual agreements than the authors.
